VAT (valueโadded tax) is added on top of a net price, so removing it is not the same as subtracting the rate: to take 20% VAT out of 120 you divide by 1.20, which gives 100, not 96. This calculator does both directions correctly at any rate and rounds to cents only at the end.

Frequently asked questions
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. For 20% VAT: 120 รท 1.20 = 100 net, so the VAT is 20. Subtracting 20% of 120 (24) would be wrong.
How do I add VAT?
Multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate. For 20% VAT: 100 ร 1.20 = 120.
What VAT rate should I use?
It depends on the country and the product. Standard rates include 20% in the UK and France, 19% in Germany, 21% in Spain and the Netherlands and 18% in Israel. Many countries also have reduced rates.
